On 20th December The Indian Corps were subjected to a fierce attack on their positions on the southern part of the British line, near Festubert during which the village of Givenchy was stormed and taken. 1st Division was sent to reinforce them and on the afternoon of 21st December, the 1st Northamptonshire battalion of 2 Brigade, 1st Division, marched to Le Touret which they reached at 4pm. Here they were ordered to attack and recover some trenches, about half a mile east of L’Epinette, that had been lost the previous day. At 7pm  the 1st Northamptonshire and 1st Loyal North Lancashire battalions moved forward and by 10pm the objective had been secured. Among the casualties sustained by 1st Northamptonshire was Gilbert Black who died from wounds on 22nd December.
